Girls Trip and Bad Moms

Anyone who has seen either Girls Trip or Bad Moms know that when recommending these movies to friends over a certain age it is important to recommend a quick trip to pee before watching. Why? Because these movies are very funny (in the case of Girls Trip there is another reason but I won’t ruin it). And the main casts of each movie is made up of all women. Christopher Hitchens said that women aren’t funny. Here’s a quote from the 2007 Vanity Fair article that laid out why women aren’t funny. Ready?

“…women, bless their tender hearts, would prefer that life be fair, and even sweet, rather than the sordid mess it actually is.”

Asshole. So let’s ignore him and everything he had to say in whatever the hell that thing was he wrote. He’s dead now so we can’t ask him if he thinks the latest wave of female led humor helps him realize he was wrong. And you know what, anyone who makes a blanket statement like ‘women aren’t funny’ aren’t worth debating. Also, as I mentioned, he’s dead and since we in Western society view death as a form of losing, he’s wrong. Women are funny. Let’s move on.

What is happening with these movies? Why are studios making movies about women behaving badly and instead of ending up dead, which is usually what happens to women when they misbehave, they triumph? The lead women end the films with better men than they had at the beginning (which is problematic but we’ll talk about that later), their friend group is stronger and happier and no woman is dead. There are hundreds of these movies starring men but very few with women. Are studios seeing women as viable audiences? Are studios scrambling because the rom-com genre seems to have died out?

Maybe these movies are being made because women are funny and people want to laugh. I know I am looking forward to more movies starring mostly women that don’t end with one (or both, Thelma and Louise) of them dead for daring to be the center of a story.
