Mindy Kaling is ambitious. And we, as consumers of media, are the direct beneficiaries of her ambition. I have enjoyed every project she involves herself in. She’s going to be in the Ocean’s 8 film coming out this summer. She was in A Wrinkle in Time. The Mindy Project remains one of my all time favorite TV shows. I laughed all the way through her first book and I haven’t read her second one but I just ordered it from the library so I have that to look forward to.
Kaling continues to expand what she believes herself capable of. She’s the type of creator I watch with great anticipation since I know every new thing she does grows out of what she did before. How to say that better? She is like an auto-buy author, the type of writer that without reading the blurb you pre-order their next book the second Amazon lets you. I want to know what she’s going to say or do next. I don’t mean her personal life, that is her own business. That being said, her Instagram is totally worth following.
Mindy Kaling is that rare creator who makes work that feels genuine to her and yet is so easily identifiable. Mindy Lahiri said and did something at least once an episode that I identified with, either with a proud nod or a cringe. That character was so delightful, she wasn’t perfect and she wasn’t a villain. She just was and that was absolutely enough.
Let us all pause and remember that drunken bike ride into a pool from the pilot.
“I’m Sandra Bullock!”
