When I look in the mirror, I see my mother’s face. I knew this would happen. I share a remarkable amount of physical characteristics with her. Health at Every Size is not a diet book, it’s a book about how to alter your mindset regarding food and exercise. It is very similar to a book we read a month or so ago, Intuitive Eating. Both are excellent conversations about two important topics. One, diets don’t work. The Phantom Five Defined: I have spent almost my entire life either planning to lose 5 lbs, in the process of losing 5 pounds or wishing I could lose 5 lbs, even when I had just lost 5 lbs. My therapist gave me Intuitive Eating when I was talking to her about my challenges around parenting and food. I’ve read a lot of books about healthy eating in my day, but this book is completely different. This book is not about how you should modify your food intake to change your weight or your health, it’s about your relationship with food. Our culture has inserted itself between humans and their food and it’s mostly been done for profit.

For those of you not familiar with Lindy West, she is a very, very funny comedian and an excellent writer. What’s even more impressive, is that she has taken those skills and uses them as tools for political activism. Lindy isn’t afraid to speak up on notoriously difficult subjects like abortion, rape jokes and fat shaming. Well, maybe she is afraid, but she does it anyway and we’ve all agreed that means she’s brave.
